Last Saturday the Walcha and District Historical Society held an event to showcase the wedding dresses held in the archives. Garments and accessories of brides, and their maids, dating from the late 1880’s up until the 1990’s were on display in the old woolshed at the museum.
There were nine outfits on show from the modern collection (post-1930) and five older gowns. The oldest from a wedding in 1857 for Agnes Dalgleish Scott and John Connal which was held at Surveyors Creek. The bride wore a handmade cream silk taffeta dress with flounces on a crinoline skirt, This dress and the original tulle veil edged in handmade lace along with the original wax flower coronet were on view.
The wedding dress, a wedding photo and accessories owned by the daughter of Walcha’s first mayor, Robert Hamilton, were also on show. Mary Jane Hamilton married William Henry ‘Harry’ Bath in 1891. Relatives of both Robert Hamilton and Henry Bath were at the exhibition.
