THE Goodwin boys, Steve and his son Kyle, have been on a roll over the past few weeks on the bowling green, firstly winning the annual Pasture Wonderland with John McLean and Jamie Kerr before taking out the club championship fours last Sunday with Gordon Bird and Greg Carter. In the final, the victorious quartet proved too strong for runners-up Willy Makeham, D.G. Clare, Fred Henry and “Snow” Bird.
MOUNTAIN bike riders Joe Kermode, Nixon Bird and Sam Feltham competed at the recent 2017 NSW XCO state championships held at the University of New England course in Armidale and all three competitors performed well in their various age divisions. Nixon finished runner-up in the 13 years, Joe 8th in 15 years, and Sam 7th in 17 years. A big effort, boys.
SEVERAL dropped catches didn’t help the Walcha District Cricket team’s chances last Sunday at Glen Innes, allowing the home side to muster 7/285 off their 50 overs. The visitors were in strife at 7/90 in their 23rd over but at least they rallied to put on more than 100 runs off their final 18 overs.
URALLA allrounder Jay Grills led the way scoring 57. Brad Partridge knocked up 28 batting at number 10, Thor Crombie and Jacob Sherrin both compiled 17 after opener Ed Blomfield made 28 at the top of the order. From the cricket pitch
ROUND Swamp continued on their winning way when they easily defeated Uralla, and although Colts didn’t have it all their own way against Kentucky, they managed to get home in the end.
At John Oxley, Swamp managed to set the visitors a modest total of 128 which was thanks mainly to opener Luke Wellings and Ben France who both scored 30 runs, while Ossie Kuhr chipped in 21.
The nine-player Swamp outfit only faced 21.1 overs, of which Uralla opener Cameron Kelly sent down 10 of them to capture 5/58.
Allrounder Jay Gills picked up 2/23 and then went on to top score for his team when he opened the batting with nine runs.
Uralla could only manage 45 runs after Wellings did the early damage collecting 4/14 off his seven overs and then Lee Harrison ran through the tailenders snaring 4/8 including 4/0 off his last six deliveries.
France grabbed the other two wickets midway through the innings before finishing with 2/17 off nine overs.
The next highest scorer for Uralla after Grills was Kelly with eight runs.
At the Park, Kentucky made 118 off 37 overs with opener MIchael Aspinall leading the charge with 30 runs. He received valuable assistance from Daniel Boyd who contributed 27, whereas Beau Abraham chipped in with 13.
Opener Sam Martin was Colts’ most successful bowler on the day, capturing 4/36. His opening partner Thor Crombie took 2/26, Ed Blomfield 2/12 while Cameron Little and Jacob Sherrin both picked up a wicket each.
Man of the Match Blomfield hit a game high 37, Paul Pittman made 25 and Brad Dade 19 to help Colts pass their assignment in 26 overs with two wickets up their sleeve.
Teenager Daniel Boyd completed a solid all-round match, taking 3/35 while Abraham and Aaron Johnson both finished with a couple of wickets each.
This Saturday, Colts take on Uralla at the Park while Swamp do battle with Kentucky at John Oxley Sportsground.
Glen Innes defeated Walcha by 90 runs at King George Oval at Glen Innes last Sunday in their interdistrict Connelly Cup fixture after the homeside set the visitors a total of 285 off their 50 runs.
Glen got off to a solid start when their openers put on a 130-run stand-off 30 overs. Before adding another 155 off their final 20 overs.
Opener Thor Crombie captured 2 for 25 for Walcha, while Cameron Wood, Aaron Johnson, Lachie Fletcher and Jacob Sherrin all managed to pick up one wicket each.
Opener Ed Blomfield made 28 runs, Sherrin 17 and Paul Pittman 11 but the visitors were in strife at 7/90 in their 23rd over.
A rear guard action from Jay Grills 576, Brad Partridge 28 and Crombie 17 added some starch to the total but Walcha were never really in the hunt.
Walcha’s next district game is against Armidale No 2 here at the Park on January 14.
