The electricity network was shut off just after 11pm on Tuesday.
Essential Energy northern manager David Crough said the fault started on the powerline between Uralla and Walcha.
“Crews patrolled this section of line to ensure it was safe to restore power,” Mr Crough said.
Homes and businesses in Armidale, Uralla, Walcha, Hillgrove and surrounding areas were affected.
The start of the outage could not be identified, but it’s believed it was the result of a direct lightning strike to the power network.
“In conjunction with TransGrid, our crews and control centre worked as quickly and safely as possible to identify the problem and progressively restore powers for customers,” Mr Crough said.
Power was restored in Armidale by 12:20am.
Uralla and Walcha were lit up by 2:45am.
