Following the declaration of Mrs Hilda Chandler as the oldest Walcha resident, Australia Day Ambassador Dr Yvonne McMaster presented the awards, and Mayor Eric Noakes congratulated the winners.
Walcha’s community organisation of the year was declared to be the Walcha and District Historical Society. Judges said the group of history lovers had excelled in preserving and promoting the history and culture of the Walcha Shire.
“They work tirelessly in the upkeep of the Walcha Museum and Pioneer Cottage, and keep it open to the public,” said Mrs Reilly. They also continually volunteer to maintain a high standard of our historical records. They maintain the history centre in the local library and ensure it is available for historical searches.”
The Walcha citizens of 2017 were then announced, with the young citizen of the year awarded to Thomas Micallef.
Thomas was heavily involved in a ‘Youth Frontiers’ program during the past year and worked with the Mayor to bring young people and senior citizens together at the Apsley Riverview Hostel and Walcha Central School.
“ A polite, considerate and community-minded young person, Thomas has also been involved in many other activities,” Mrs Reilly said.
Finally, the Walcha Australia Day citizen of the year award was given to Margaret Wellings who is involved in many community groups and committees.
“Mrs Wellings has been a volunteer Scripture Teacher for over 30 years; was patron of the Walcha Scouts, working for many years at all their activities; she has voluntarily worked for the Walcha Poultry Club; meals on wheels; school committees; Church activities and Ladies Guild for over 30 years,” said Mrs Reilly. “She has outstanding qualities and is always willing to help.”
