While the Namoi JO was set up as a pilot in late 2014 as part of the Fit For The Future process, Walcha Council has been working collaboratively with the NU member councils since the formation of the Namoi Regional Organisations of Councils in July 2002 and has had some form of cooperative arrangement ever since. Areas of collaboration include the Walcha Shire’s waste collection, information technology , procurement and water services.
“Walcha Council voted unanimously to remain a partner of Namoi Unlimited,” said Walcha Mayor Eric Noakes.
“It was considered that the foundations, working groups and processes established under its leadership, and the collaborative approach of the partnering Councils puts NU in a very strong position to advocate for funding ahead of any formative JO.”
Mr Noakes also said the withdrawal of Uralla Council did not change Walcha Council’s plan to work with them in China next month.
“As Uralla remains a member of Namoi Unlimited until the end June, Walcha will still be continuing with our joint presentation in China,” Mr Noakes said.
“Much of what will be put forward in China will be ongoing and benefit both Councils into the future. Agricultural and tourism will be at the forefront of this and JO boundaries will not be a restriction on ongoing collaboration. Associate membership remains a real possibility for councils and neighbouring JO’s. Walcha Council wishes Uralla well in their move to the New England JO.”
Namoi Unlimited still hopes to take Uralla on as an affiliate member.
It means they will have no voting rights but will be able to collaborate with NU member councils.
