“We are excited to present a new format to find the next Walcha Showgirl,” Mrs Martin said.
“At this weekend’s Walcha Show there will be a full competition for both senior and junior showgirls to win the 2018 title and go on and represent Walcha at the 2019 zone finals.”
Two young women, Sophie Uren and Felicity Yarnold, will compete for the senior showgirl title while Amy Kermode, Heidi Mathews and Megan Tisdell will battle it out for the junior sash.
“For the first time in many years the decision was made to host a showgirl competition during the Walcha Show,” Mrs Martin said.
“In conjunction with the senior Showgirl competition we will also be holding a junior competition giving the younger generation in Walcha the opportunity to experience the benefits of the The Land Showgirl Competition which has been going for more than 55 years.”
The finalists will participate in activities at the show including the presentation of awards, the grand parade and a public speaking showcase.
“The Showgirl Competition provides an opportunity for young women to become involved in their local community,” Mrs Martin said.
“The experience of entering will also provide an opportunity to advance leadership, confidence, knowledge and communication skills.”
Current Walcha showgirl Tanisha Daniel said the showgirl competition helped improve her confidence in an interview situation.
“It also allowed me to meet like-minded girls that encouraged me to take further moves in my career,” she said.
Both senior and junior entrants will be judged on their personality, confidence, ambition, general knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and speech.
“The winning senior and junior girls will be selected by a panel of three judges and announced at the opening of the 2018 show on Saturday afternoon,” Mrs Martin said
“The winner of the senior Showgirl competition will then go on to represent Walcha at the 2019 Zone 4 Finals.”
We will profile all the candidates this week in the lead up to the show…..
