What are the biggest challenges facing youth in rural Australia?
There are a lack of opportunities for rural youth to go back to the land after they have completed their studies. While this is due to many factors such as drought, inheritance issues, and the difficulty of raising capital, I think that there are also ways that communities and the government can encourage and support rural youth to return to the land.

What made you want to apply to be the Walcha Showgirl for 2019?
I was born in Walcha, and have lived on a farm in Woolbrook my entire life. I am so lucky to live in rural Australia, an experience what very few Australians have.
I want to push myself to try new things and grow as a person, I saw the opportunity and thought it would be a great way to become more involved in the local community. The Walcha Show is a staple event in the Walcha annual calendar and it is an event that has always been a highlight of my year, I want to get other young people involved in the show and I see this as a way of doing that.
What experience will you bring? Why should the judges select you?
I am entering this competition with an open mind, I see this as an opportunity to develop my confidence. I have been involved in agriculture my entire life and feel that this is an advantage in this competition but I would like to learn more and share the importance of agriculture with other young people.
What do you have to do at the show next week and how have you prepared for that?
I am excited to be competing at the show on a number of levels which is going to make me a busy girl the whole time. I am parading cattle in the cattle rings and competing in the junior judging competition. This means I will be preparing cattle and watching others compete to gage what level the cattle are at for when it comes time for me to be compete in the junior judging competition. On top of this I will be performing my duties as a Junior Show Girl finalist, handing our ribbons, announcing special guests, doing a speech (which I’m so nervous about) and being involved in the grand parade.
Who is the biggest supporter you have and how are they helping you?
I have a lot of supporters but I think my biggest fans are my mum and dad, they are always behind me and encourage me to do my best in whatever I do. Kristy Fogarty encouraged me to enter this competition, and I really appreciate her pushing me to believe in myself.
What are you looking forward to the most?
I am looking forward to being involved in a local community event, it’s all about having fun and I really want to have a good laugh with everyone and enjoy the entire weekend regardless of the final outcome. But what I am really looking forward to is; dad having a go at riding a steer and competing in the smash up derby. Let’s see how many people will go and asking him if he is going to jump on a steer.

I find public speaking hard, my nerves get the better of me most of the time. But this is why I have entered, I want to get better at public speaking and this is a great way for me to develop my skills.

My favourite thing about living in the country is the genuine country personalities and genuine traits you find in people. Even though everyone knows everybody, it makes me feel safe and that I always have a friend close by to have a chat to.
What are the biggest challenges facing youth in rural Australia?
The biggest challenges facing rural youth in Australia I feel is the mental wellbeing of youth. To help ease this issue I think Australian schools need to create a class that specifically teaches children how to cope with mental health and what avenues are out there for them to get help.
Tell me something surprising/funny/secret/inspiring about yourself that not many people know.
I want to train gold fish professionally? Not really, I hope to study agribusiness and become a leader in the agricultural industry. I want to go through life knowing that I have done good and made a difference. And if I am as crazy as my parents who knows what I might achieve.
