N.R. “Rex” Turton recalled the early days of the Association saying: “The general competition was played in the winter months so that it did not interfere with the cricket season as so many cricketers formed the majority of the tennis players.”

In March 1950 the Walcha Association joined the New England Tennis Group, an organisation that was formed in August 1948 to foster tennis in an area extending from Tamworth to Tenterfield.

In the mid 1950s the Association began the long process that eventually saw six courts built on land in Angle Street. In the meantime it held its social and tournament competitions at the Apsley Tennis Club courts in Hamilton Street.

The old gravel pit on the corner of Fitzroy and Lagoon Streets was investigated as a possible site in 1956 as was land in the vicinity of the Ex-Services Club. The Association next investigated the purchase of two acres of land across the river from the gravel pit but found that it was reserved for the Walcha Central School.

In November 1957 the Principal of Walcha School offered the Association free use of a portion of the school grounds for their courts. While this offer was well received the Association decided that it needed to have a long-term lease on the land and as a result it was not until 1964 that negotiations with both the Lands and Education Departments were successfully completed.

The Angle Street courts were built with the assistance of the Walcha Council and with volunteer labour. Funds were raised by donation and by a variety of events. The first tournament on the new courts was held on the weekend of March 25 and 26, 1972. A report in the Walcha News of March 30 said it was “made possible by the efforts of the many people who assisted at working bees both before and during the tournament.”

A barbecue and a day of social tennis marked the official opening of the present synthetic courts on Sunday November 5, 1995.
