“At the July Council Meeting a list of candidates put forward by the community was finalised,” said Walcha mayor Eric Noakes.
“The preferred two options for the main sports oval are Peter Fenwicke and Andrew Laurie.”
Longtime Walcha Rams captain Peter Fenwicke also captained the Wallabies for two years, while Andrew Laurie toured with the Wallabies on two occasions and was as devoted to cricket as he was rugby.
The shortlist of names for Fitzroy and Middle Street Bridges nominations include former Walcha News editor Blue Hogan; OAM recipient and local Aboriginal elder Shirley Davison and former shire president Rex Turton.
Cleve Gibson was the councillor who was instrumental in securing funding for the Apsley River levee bank construction following the flood in the 1960’s and it has been suggested the renaming of Fitzroy Street bridge would be a suitable memorial for him.
Also suggested for one of the bridges is former Walcha Central School student Lieutenant Michael Fussell who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan when only 25-years-old.
The community will have a ten-day period to vote for one of these names starting later this month. Forms will be distributed to each home, and extra forms will be available from Council.
“The person that records the highest vote will have Fitzroy Street bridge named in their honour and the second highest the Middle Street bridge,” said Mayor Eric Noakes.
“You will also be able to vote via Survey Monkey and Facebook. Council representatives will man the Street Stall booth on nominated days to provide information and collect voting forms. This is a great opportunity to have your say on an issue that will have a long lasting legacy for Walcha.”
