Improvements to the stretch of Thunderbolts Way near Nowendoc will begin this financial year thanks to a new funding stream called the ‘Saving Lives on Country Roads Program’.

“Under this program, Council has been successful in gaining funds to undertake improvements on the Thunderbolts Way, between Topdale Road and Quarry Road,” said Walcha Council director of engineering Dylan Reeves..
The main focus of the upgrade will be undertaking improvements to the intersection of Topdale Road and Thunderbolts Way and implement further signage north of the intersection. Works will commence in early 2019.”
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said locals will benefit from the upgrades.
“We have an aim of zero fatalities on roads in our region and this investment in Thunderbolts Way near Nowendoc will help to improve safety for drivers,” he said.
“Country people make up a third of the NSW population, but last year fatalities on country roads made up nearly 70 per cent of the road toll. The shocking truth is that you are four times more likely to be killed on roads in the country compared to people who live in the city.”

Mr Anderson said Thunderbolts Way was a key link between Tamworth and the coast.
“I am delighted to see this funding allocation and there is nothing more important than safety on our roads,” he said
“Our communities have specific road safety issues that can be addressed through local campaigns or grants like these will really give a helping hand.”
Mr Reeves said Council has been successful over the past two financial years, improving various sections of the Thunderbolts Way under the Black Spot Program.
“Over the past two years, Council has delivered upgrades on the stretch Mukki Creek to Hellhole Road and Glen Morrison Road to Pandora under Black Spot Funding,” he said.
“This financial year, Council has funding to upgrade the intersection of Thunderbolts Way and Baringa Road under Black Spot Funding. The announcement of an additional $133,691 dollars is great news for the Thunderbolts Way.”
The Saving Lives on Country Roads Program aims to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads by addressing high risk curves and installing safety features to prevent driver fatigue and lane departure crashes.
