“It was paid for by donations given to us throughout the year,” said Walcha Historical Society president Kate Hoy.
“The steps were at a stage that they were getting very wobbly and needed to be replaced, and we wanted to allow wheelchair access. All things need replacing eventually, and the work was done by Josh Wellings who did a brilliant job.”
The St Patrick’s Primary School excursion was part of the ‘personal and family histories’ and ‘my school community grounds’ units of the Department of Education curriculum.
Kate Hoy was on hand with Walcha Historical Society treasurer Kerry Dickson and secretary Jane Morrison to help show the visitors around. The children were given a checklist of historical items to find throughout the museum complex. Kindergarten teacher Mrs Jane Riley said she was amazed at their enthusiasm.
“Usually their attention span for a set task is around 15 minutes,” she said.
“But in here they were wandering around the museum looking at things and asking questions for more than an hour.”
After their tour, the children enjoyed a picnic lunch in the museum grounds before walking back to school.
