Rotary Walcha is hosting a fun family event this Saturday at the Walcha Race Course as a result of a nation-wide fundraising effort to help communities in drought.

The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) joined forces with Channel 9 and Rotary Australia collected $10million through a national fundraising drive which ended on September 30 and now it is being distributed.

The peak body representing Australian agriculture says the 2018 Drought Relief Fund is an initiative in direct response to calls from everyday Australians wanting to help. As a registered charitable organisation, Rotary Australia is collecting and administering the donations.

On Saturday October 13 the Walcha Rotary Club will use some some of the funds to hold an event aimed to lift the spirits of farmers and small business people struggling emotionally and financially with the unrelenting drought.

At the Walcha Racecourse there will be a free barbecue, live entertainment and childrens activities for all Walcha residents to enjoy from 11am.

It’s about your wellbeing – give support and be supported

“The aim is to bring together all elements of the community for everyone to take a break from the drought that won’t break,” said Walcha Rotarian Andrew Corlette.

“It’s about your wellbeing – give support and be supported.”

Starting at 11am the event features free barbecued rib-eye steaks and sausages.  There will also be live music and loads of free activities for children including a jumping castle, lolly scramble, sack races, tug of war, face painting, a play dough stand and more.

“There will also be free tickets in raffles of $100 vouchers to be redeemed in Walcha businesses,” Mr Corlette said.

“So, whether you are a farmer, a business person, a farm worker or employed in our local shops, this is an event for you.  Get a group of friends together for a fun day out. The grounds at the racecourse are looking lovely with trees coming into leaf and the grass miraculously green.  There will be shady spots to set up your tables and chairs and a marquee to shelter from the rain - we hope! Come along with BYO table and chairs, plates, drinks and salads.  Everything else is available  free.”
