WALCHA District Cricket team was desperately unlucky not to record a win against Peel Valley in their M. A. Connelly Cup clash at the Park last Sunday. Walcha needed just one more wicket, while Peel needed five runs for victory after losing their ninth wicket.

PEEL number 11 batsperson was 14-year-old schoolgirl Deni Baker, who held her end up while her offsider Brett Douglas scored the runs, all in singles, off five-and-a-half overs. Earlier in the day, Deni sent down eight overs to capture 2/23.
EVERGREEN Walcha legend Barry hoy reckons the girl can play, and had Lachie Fletcher caught before trapping Aaron Johnson LBW. “Bazza” mentioned there would be quite a few players around here that Deni would keep on their toes.
As 'Ming' pointed out, he is on a bit of a run with the Cross trophies, having combined with Marg Davidson to win the Colleen Cross Memorial recently.
A COUPLE of my old Rugby League cricket team mates played for Peel last Sunday – Sam Bowden, who captained the side and took a couple of catches, and Gavin White, who snared 2/23. Sam was a member of our 2006 premiership-winning squad, while Gav was in the 2008 team that won the Walcha News Cup.
ON the local cricket scene, Round Swamp opening bowler Luke Wellings returned his career-best figures of six wickets at a cost of just three runs. “Meggsy” captured the first five wickets to fall and was then spelled before returning to finalise the Colts innings at 51 runs.
BACK in February 2015, “Meggsy” claimed 6/18 against Colts. This was his previous best figure. In the major semi-final against Colts in 2010, he took a hat-trick when he dismissed Chris “Fatcat” Laurie, Cameron Little and Mark Berry with successive deliveries on the day his oldest son Cody was born.
BIG Wigs of the Week: Peter Acton 84, Cameron Wood 63, Nick Endacott 51, Andrew Fuller 51 no. Luke Wellings 6/3, Mitch Scrivener 3/11, Jay Grills 3/24. District – Nick Endacott 30, Barry Hoy 31, Lachie Fletcher 3/25.
POULTRY Farmers of the Week: Mitch Scrivener (silver), Tommy Le Strande, Jacob Hunt, Lachie Hunt, Dan Hunt, Ben Hall, Will Hall, Lee Harrison. District Ducks: Jay Grills, Cameron Wood, Aaron Johnson.
SPECIAL mention to the Hunt boys – father Dan, eldest son Jacob and youngest Lachie, who were all dismissed without scoring. Not something you would see every day.
LOCAL “sandgreen specialist” John Mann was up to his old tricks again when he shot a score under his age on his way to winning the A. J. Cross Trophy last Sunday. As “Ming” pointed out, he is on a bit of a run with the Cross trophies, having combined with Marg Davidson to win the Colleen Cross Memorial recently. Well done, John.
ONE thing John won’t be able to do is win the I. J. Cross Patron’s Trophy because he is co-patron with Irwin. Still, there is no reason why he can’t go after the prize supplied by Simeon Cross, but he will have to be in a three-person ambrose team to win that one early in July.
THE “Old Bloke” didn’t have a bad day out on Sunday, because not only did he win the main prize, he took out the putting competition with 21 jabs and also snuck home in his matchplay against John McCormack on the first extra hole.
LATE in December, Chyna Smith was voted Flippers’ Swimmer of the Week after her record-breaking swim in the open girls 200m freestyle event. Chyna is not only Swimmer of the Week, but more like Swimmer of the Month because the Flippers are in recess and won’t resume until the last Tuesday in January.
