This section of Thunderbolts Way is the most used route to Sydney for residents of New England and southern Queensland, and also an important tourist and recreational motorbike rider route.
Upgrading Thunderbolts Way had been a priority for many years, Walcha Council Mayor Eric Noakes said.
“We’re grateful for the funding, and Council will add a further $1 million over the five years of the project.”
“This is great news for Walcha Council and their neighbours, MidCoast Council,” Mr Anderson said.
With this funding, Mr Anderson said, Walcha Council can upgrade priority sections of deteriorated road pavements; widen the road to at least eight metres; and install safety features, including upgraded guardrails, safer curve alignments, and improved vehicle signs and road outlining.
It will identify and prioritise key upgrade projects to improve access for more efficient heavy vehicles.
It will also reduce travel times and operator costs, including maintenance expenses.
“The support we get from Kevin Anderson and Roads Minister Melinda Pavey to improve this important link is terrific,” Cr Noakes said.
