WHEN Graham Marshall arrived at the front counter of Walcha Council Chambers last week, he was met with, "good morning, Walcha council, Sahra speaking", which he thought was quite humourous, as did the other office employees present. By all accounts, Sahra "Eric" Rabbitt had forgotten she wasn't answering a phone call but used the same line anyway.

HEARD a whisper there was some "tomfoolery" played out at one of the local law enforcement residences over the weekend when about 90ml of water was tipped into a rain gauge at the abode of the lock-up keeper.
ALTHOUGH it was neither admitted or denied, apparently the highest ranking policeman in town poured some moisture into the gauge while the lock-up keeper was out of town. On arrival home, our newest policeman was rather suprised to find out that there was that much water in the gauge despite the surrounding areas not being all that damp.
WALCHA Central School prime minister Mark Hall has been a regular visitor to the pool during the past few seasons, especially for early morning sessions. Word has it that Mark has finally worked out what the box on the shower wall with the little red light is there for. Hopefully, Mark will enjoy a hot shower from now until the end of the season.
WELL done to Woolbrook resident Ana Haling on achieving the highest points score in the dressage test at the Australian Stockhorse Nationals in the youth division at the ALEC in Tamworth recently. Earlier in the year, Ana finished Reserve Champion 15 to 17 years in dressage at the NSW Pony Club Championships at Murwillumbah. Way to go, Ana.
After years of service to the club, Bill Heazlett and Tim Beaumont have decided to step down as directors of Walcha Golf Club.
LAST week, Ryley Smith competed in the Diocesan Championships at Gunnedah Pool, where she swam four PBs including slicing 13 seconds off her 200m freestyle time. Ryley qualified for Diocesan after she finished 13 years girls' champion at O'Connor School while her older sister Chyna was the senior girls' champion but chose not to go to the next level.
WALCHA St Patrick's School was represented at the Diocesan Touch trials in Tamworth recently by Ollie Greig, Bateson Pittman, Jack Healy, Darcy Macpherson, Will Hall and Ella Lynch. After the trials, Ollie was selected in the Armidale Diocesan squad to take part in the Polding trials at Parkes at the end of May. Go gettum, Ollie.
HOW many policemen does it take to hold up a pole? There is a photo doing the rounds at the moment after some of our "boys in blue" helped with the erection of poles at the showground earlier in the week in readiness for the woodchop. You might have to see it to find out the answer.
BIG Wigs of the Week: Newie - Troy Yarnold and Greg Schaefer got off to a great start to the season when they both picked the card; Apsley - Scotty Withers 12 points; Vet Supplies - Raya Osborne and Dion Bird, both 12 points, although Raya won on a margins countback.
THE Walcha Golf Club held their annual general meeting recently where the committee and the majority of directors were returned to their positions. President Allan Green has commenced his 11th term as head of the club, secretary Jenny Lisle her 12th term, and Margaret Davidson has accepted her 10th term as treasurer.
A TOTAL of 22 members were present at the annual general meeting where captain Willy Brennan was re-elected and handicapper Don Brooks remains, as does publicity officer A. J. Cross. Directors are Miles Archdale, Neil Dark, Don Brooks, Lee Fletcher, Caroline Street, Penny King, Allan Green and Willy Brennan.

LAST week when I called into the Walcha Telecottage to drop off my sports reports, chief executive officer Anthea Macpherson suggested it must be just about time the NSW Sandgreen Championships were contested. When I informed her that was correct, and that they were on last weekend, she came back with "well, I suppose we will see you next Monday on Tuesday". Not sure if the words came out the way she wanted them to, but as I usually drop off my stuff on Mondays and I wouldn't be back from Manildra until late that day, I knew exactly what she meant.
ON the subject of Manildra, it certainly was very dry on the golf course, but a good time was still had by our Walcha representatives, especially Wayne Brennan and Peter Norbury, who won the nett event. The boys were having some fun on return home, with Peter suggesting he was surprised NBN or Prime hadn't been up to do a television interview with Walcha's newest state champions.
THE swimming club held the final round of their championships on Tuesday and will finalise their season next week when the annual presentations are made on Tuesday afternoon.
