RECEIVED a phone call last week from local sheriff Anthony Smith to inform me that the Royal Hotel publican at Manildra had reported a Walcha golfer had done a runner without paying for his accommodation while competing in the NSW Sandgreen Championships recently and if I could shed any light on the issue. Was, as a matter of fact, I can.

BUT before that, luckily "Smithy" was only pulling my leg about the phone call from pub boss Carl Hansen and couldn't keep a straight face as he attempted to deliver a gee up instigated by another golfer who had made the trip and worked out what had happened.
WHAT happened was... one bloke thought the accommodation for three nights was $135 per room and collected half that amount from his roommate before handing the cash over to the pub people. As it turned out, the price was $135 alright, but that was per person per room. Spokesperson for our room, Johnny O'Hara, contacted our hosts after realising the genuine mistake when we arrived home and fixed up the balance, which was gratefully accepted.
HEARD a bit of a whisper Apsley Street resident, local builder and former English wrestler Malcolm Ballard might be overdue for a trip to SpecSavers. By all accounts, Mat strolled through the doors at Apsley Motors to pay for fuel and on the way back out, walked straight into the glass door which he thought was still open but was not. The bridge of Mal's nose has been paying the consequences.
RUMOUR has it "The Tops" retired grazieress Ethel Henry cooked a beautiful chocolate cake and decided to decorate it with chocolate icing. After coating the cake, Ethel sampled a bit, only to find the icing wasn't up to scratch simply because she had covered it with Gravox by mistake. Maybe Ethel could get a lift to SpecSavers with Mal.
"ANTLERS Rest" resident Julie Abraham thought it was a great joke when she frightened the daylights out of me as I was parking my car outside the credit union last Friday. Julie strolled past close to my door, which had the window down, and in a loud voice enquired into how I was going.
Age and size were no barrier to the competitors who kept the crowd entertained with their skills. Well done to everyone involved with the woodchop.
LATER that afternoon, after locking up the pool, I wandered into my backyard, only to have son Ben spring out from behind a bush and scare the tripe out of me again. The next morning, my much-better half Linda was amused when on my way to work at the pool, a cat flew out of the above-mentioned bush to continue the "heart missing a beat" sequence. Enough is enough!
THANKS to all the golfers who turned up last Sunday to make Mum's memorial trophy day such an enjoyable and memorable one. Well done to my playing partner with the broad shoulders and fellow "mollydooker" Julie Hoad who played extremely well, only to see us pipped at the post by winners Simeon Cross and Donna Martin. Thanks also to our playing partners John Mann and Jeanette Wark for a great day out.
ONE of the highlights of the Walcha Show held last weekend for a lot of people was the woodchop which went nearly all day on Saturday. Age and size were no barrier to the competitors who kept the crowd entertained with their skills. Well done to everyone involved with the woodchop.
GEE, there are a lot of talented people in our district and to see that, all you had to do was stroll around the pavilions at the show. A pat on the back to everyone who took the time and made the effort into making the 2019 Walcha Show what it was.
CONGRATULATIONS to the three Wellings boys who won prizes in the art section of the show. Simon picked up a first prize and was junior champion, Eli received a second prize, while Toby was awarded a highly recommended. Must have got their artistic talent from their grandfather, but just which one?
I NOTICED Stephen "Roley" Hoy took out the most perfumed rose at the show. No doubt chief steward of the Horticultural Pavilion Phyllis Hoy would have avoided any controversy by stepping aside when it came to judging that section of the flower show. And did "Roley" grow the rose himself? You will have to ask him.
LAST week, the Sydney Harbour Bridge celebrated 87 years since it was opened and now, nine days later on this very day, my dear old dad Irwin John Cross reaches the same milestone. Hope you have a great day, I.J.
BIG Wigs of the Week: Apsley - Denis "Mick" White (picked the card); Newie - Alissa West, Hagan Dunn, Kenny "Ross" Green (all picked the card); Vet Supplies - Dion Bird, Raya Osborne 14 points, with "DJ" the winner on a margins countback.
TALK about an unbelievable swimming season, especially weather-wise - well, up until now. The water temperature was still at 27 degrees when swimmers hit the water on Monday morning.
THE temperature had dropped to 25 degrees at the time of going to print. That is still pretty comfortable. In the 37 years I have been pool manager, there hasn't been a previous season where the weather has been so consistently hot day after day. A reminder that the Walcha Pool season finalises this Sunday at 6pm.
