ACCORDING to the Rams bible Memories from Scrum and Ruck written by former player and publicity officer Graham Croker, specialist winger Ron Cameron was the first player to register six tries but that only came after some prompting in 1954. Having pulled out of a match with an injury, Ron was replaced by his brother Col, who had to move from hooker to fill in the new role. Col ran in five tries and when Ron came back from injury the following week after seven days prodding from his brother, proceeded to run in six tries.
THE second player to score six tries in an A grade fixture was Walcha Road school teacher Arthur Collein, a six-foot plus and powerfully-built centre who racked up his six "meat pies" in 1965 when Walcha defeated Narrabri 54-3 here at the Park.
THIRD cab off the rank was current mayor Eric "Ned" Noakes who remembers he and "Waterloo" mayor Ross "Diddles" King scored all 48 points the day the Rams rolled Gunnedah at the Park in the early 1980s. "Ned" touched down on six occasions, while "Diddles" scored the only other try along with landing a number of conversion and penalty goals.
DESPITE what the scores indicate, Walcha didn't have it all their own way against Quirindi last Saturday, especially during the first half when a lot of the play was inside Rams territory. The home side did manage a few long-range tries before "oranges" to lead 31-10, and then piled on a further 56 points during the second session to win 87-17.
THE Rams Reggies also registered a big win when they rounded up Quirindi 78-0 after scoring a dozen tries and nine conversions. Wally Davidson led the way with a hat-trick of touchdowns, while Charlie Keen scored a brace and also landed six goals.
The Roos can't seem to take a trick at the moment, especially injury-wise...
NO footy here in town this Saturday due to the Rams travelling to Moree for their top of the table clash in first grade, while both the Roos and Jillaroos head to Warialda.
THE Roos can't seem to take a trick at the moment, especially injury-wise after another four players copped bad knocks last Sunday. Forwards Colin Levingston (broken arm), Harry King (dislocated collarbone), Tim Partridge (back spasms) and Mitchell Eveleigh (aggravated pec muscle), all had to be taken from the field during a very willing encounter with Bundarra.
CONSIDERING centre Tristian Flower and hooker Dan Pascoe have already suffered season, if not career, ending injuries, coupled with the unavailability of both veteran halves Jason Latham and Glenn Olrich this weekend, the Roos may be battling to get a team on the paddock to play Warialda.
FLASHBACK to 1986 - Walcha Roos lock forward Rodney Natty scored eight tries against Gilgai in the Group 19 first division competition to assist his team to a 92-0 victory here at the park. Rams life member Bernard Lynch notched up a hat-trick of his own out of the 16 scored, while David "Seaweed" See touched down and kicked nine goals.
WITH one round remaining in the New England Veteran Pennants Golf competition, Armidale currently lead on 1020 points, followed by Walcha 1008 and Guyra 1007, while Uralla 968 and upcoming hosts Glen Innes, on 893, are realistically out of the race for the 2019 title.
LAST Thursday, Col Berry won the A grade men's with 41 points from Wayne Brennan on 40 points. Neil Dark took out B grade with the best score of the day on 42 points, while Julie Presnell, 41, snuck home from Lorraine Rennie and Penny King, both on 40 in the ladies division. The final round is scheduled for Glen Innes on Tuesday, May 21.
At the 19th
"WATERLOO mayoress" Penny King won a stableford round on Sunday with 42 points. She collected a trophy donated by Andrew Robertson.
Runner-up was Jamie Bowden on 41 points, while remaining sweepstake prizes went to Nixon Bird 36, Doug McDonald 35 and Jenny Lisle 35. Sharpest shooters at the pins were Bill Heazlett (3) and John McLaren (16).
About a dozen players travelled to the Barraba Open last Sunday where Simeon Cross and Steph Sweeney were the best of the Walcha players after carding a +8. Next best were Wayne Brennan and Neil Dark, and Bob Denniss and Peter Norbury who finished with +7. The winning score was +11.
On Thursday, the second-last round of the New England Veterans Pennants was played in Walcha. Guyra ran out the winners on 262 points followed by Walcha 261, Uralla 251, Armidale 249 and Glen Innes 248.
A grade went to Col Berry 41 points, B grade to Neil Dark 42 points and Julie Presnell took out the ladies division with 41. NTPs to Simeon Cross (3), Col Walls (Guyra 9), Bob Denniss (16) and Barry Hoad (18).
The final round of the Pennants is at Glen Innes on May 21. This Sunday is a par round.
