Elusive speedster Shae Partridge chipped-in with 20 points of her own after she scored five tries, one of which commenced in her own half and involved all three skills - speed, sidestep and swerve. Shae was rewarded for her performance with three B&F in both the group and the club.
The only time Ashford touched the ball in the opening 11 minutes of their Group 19 Second Division Ladies leaguetag game last Saturday was when their kicker placed it on halfway to restart the match. Down 46-0 at halftime, to their credit the Ashford girls refused to throw the towel in and kept trying to the full-time siren.
All 16 players who took the field for the Jillaroos played very well and picking best and fairest points was a nightmare with all members of the squad in the running for points. Well played girls. Keep up the good work.
In a game that could have gone either way, the Roos managed to salvage a draw after having lead 14-4 early in the second half. Two long range tries by Jock Abraham and Mitch Eveleigh gave the Roos some breathing space before the Roosters hit the front late in the match with two converted tries.
Referee Chris Doney made a few controversial decisions but he did referee both games and didn't have any official linesmen. Without any real support the ref did as good a job as he could and deserves a pat on the back for his one-man show.
The Rams bounced back from their narrow loss to Moree a fortnight ago when they accounted for Barraba 66-0 here at the Park last Saturday. Walcha ran in 10 tries with Dom Bower and Ed Cordingly both registering two each while Simon Newton raised the flags on eight occasions.
Rams Reggies rounded up the Bingara Gwydir River Rats 22-14 in the curtain raiser last Saturday.
The weekend the Rams will face another stern test when they take on Gunnedah here at the Park after the Red Devils defeated Moree in both grades last Saturday.
Congratulations to lawn bowlers Steve 'Normie' Goodwin, his son Kyle and Dion Bird on winning the 2019 Walcha Bowling Club triples championship last Sunday.
The 'Terrific Trio' defeated arch rivals Gordie Bird, Jamie Kerr and Greg Carter in the final 23-15.
It was the fifth time in succession for Steve and Kyle who teamed up with 'DJ' for the past two years and before that 'Normie's' oldest son. Nathan was the third member of the side to win three on the trot.
Although Jamie Kerr was a runner-up in the triples it hasn't been all doom and gloom for him on the bowls front as he joined forces with June Hayes to win the New England District Mixed Pairs Championships at the Ex-Services Club in Armidale recently.
The 'Dynamic Duo' defeated Armidale pair Lee Robinson in the final and now head to Inverell to play the Zone final in July.
Well done to 2019 Ladies Singles Bowls champion Taina Hall after she rounded up June Hayes 26-22 in the final last week. Taina reached the final after defeating Pam Makeham 27-10 while June got around Esther Hunt 25-17 in the other semi-final.
Roos Report
Walcha and Ashford played a 16-16 draw when the two teams clashed in their Group 19 Second Division clash last Saturday.
The Roos opened the scoring after 10 minutes when dummy half Drew Bird put captain Steve Eveleigh into the clear on half-way with a line-ball pass and then a couple of plays later winger Jhordan Coulter dived over in the corner.
Five minutes before half-time the Roosters equalised the score when their hooker ploughed his way to touch down and that's the way it remained up to the break.
Spectators had barely enough time to finish their hot dogs when centre Jock Abraham showed his opponents a clear pair of heels during his 60 metre burst to the tryline.
Winger Dean Kelly converted from wide out and then a few minutes later frontrower Mitchell Eveleigh intercepted the ball on halfway before racing away to score in the same position as the previous try.
Mid-way through the second session the home side replied with a converted try and then grabbed the lead after a second converted try, 16-14 with 10 minutes remaining.
Four minutes from full-time Walcha were awarded a penalty for an attempted spear tackle on skipper Eveleigh which Kelly piloted between the posts to finalise the scoring.
Club points 3 Jason Latham (and Players' Player) 2 Max Abraham 1 Riley Gibson. Group points 2 Steve Eveleigh 1 Dean Kelly. This Sunday Walcha host Tingha here at the Park.
