PRETTY in Pink were the Walcha Roos when they took on the Uralla Tigers here at the Park last Saturday, where they recorded a solid 30-14 victory over their up-the-road arch-rivals. The final score wasn't a true indication of how the game panned out, which was a willing affair right up until the final hooter.

THE Roos wore pink and the Jillaroos were attired in blue with all guernseys auctioned off for some very worthy charities including National Breast Cancer Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Men of League Foundation and various Walcha charities.
PLENTY of people dug deep into their pockets during the auction to raise $18,215. The Jillaroos guernseys brought in $9,030 the Roos made $8,625 while another $560 was handed over for shorts and beanies. On behalf of the Walcha Rugby League, thanks to everyone who supported the fundraiser especially auctioneer Matt Larkings who did a wonderful job.
MEN of League Foundation was represented by former Australian lock forward Jim Leis who commenced his career with North Tamworth before moving to Sydney in 1980, where he played for Western Suburbs, Canterbury and Cronulla for a total of 89 first grade games over seven seasons.
IN THE late 1970s Jim remembers making his first grade debut here at the Park for Norths where he played opposite to a bloke by the name of Robert George Laurie who he reckons made things very uncomfortable during his first outing with the big boys. Funny that, Truck had a habit of doing it to the majority of his opponents.
DURING his Sydney First Grade season debut Jim was selected as lock for the inaugural State of Origin game in 1980 and was named Dally M. lock and Rookie of the Year that same season.
ALTHOUGH he only played one State of Origin game, Jim was in good company as captain Tom Raudonikus, Steve Edge, Graham Eadie, Graham Wyn, Bob Cooper, Gary Hanley and Robert Stone all played their one and only State of Origin match the same night.
WELL done to the Walcha Rams who downed Scone 52-5 at Scone last Saturday as they continue their impressive start to the Central North season. The Reggies played out at 10-all draw with Scone.
AFTER the first game of the Group 19 Second Division second round Warialda remain undefeated on 16 points followed by Bundara 12, Ashford and Walcha 9, Uralla 8 Tingha and Bingara 4 with the Roos next opponent Tenterfield on 2.
FOLLOWING their heartbreaking last minute lost last Saturday, the Jillaroos are in third spot on 10 points, Uralla and Tinga currently lead on 14 points, while Tinga and Tenterfield are both on 8 points, followed by Bundara 4. As yet Ashford haven't opened their account.
LOCAL veteran athlete Taddy McFarlane recently competed in a half marathon in Sydney over 21km which included Macquarie Street, under the Harbour Bridge, Government House, Cahill Expressway, Botany Gardens and Hyde Park. Taddy stopped the clock in 2 hours and 2 seconds to finish 6th in his age group 70 to 79 years.
REFLECTING on the event, Taddy reckons it was the most gruelling course he has ever run and getting tangled up with another runner at a water station certainly didn't help. Overall Taddy finished 4,463 of the 8,449 competitors which isn't a bad effort for a 75 year old. Good on ya Taddy.
Jillaroos Report
WALCHA suffered their third loss of the season Saturday at the Park when they were defeated by competition leaders Uralla 14-10. The Jillaroos led with just two minutes remaining, before the visitors scored a converted try under the posts to steal victory. Midway through the first half Robin Broadbent was unlucky not to score after she regathered and touched down only to be called back for a knock on.
A few minutes later Uralla opened their account with a converted try and then increased their advantage 8-0, which stayed that way until half-time. Ten minutes into the second stanza Hannah Byrne was unlucky not to score in the kiosk corner but three minutes later the hosts wouldn't be denied when Jordyn Hoy scored one of her evasive trademark tries near the posts.
Goal kicker Broadbent raised the flags and then three minutes later the Jillaroos hit the lead when speedster Hoy raced away to touch down. Down 10-8 but not out Uralla rallied to win the match with a last ditch effort.
