It is also the most damaged and will require extensive repair and possibly a new dedication panel if the shards of glass are incomplete.
Mary Keightley (also known as Maria) was the eldest child of Robert Levingston (1845-1925) and Mary Jane (nee Case) (1848-1926). She had 10 siblings, all born In Walcha, several of whom married members of the Steep and Gillies families. On 11th October 1891 she married John Edward Keightley and had by him nine children who were instrumental in having the window installed in memory of their mother. Many of her descendants still live in Walcha including A J Cross. Mary died on 17th September 1955.
This right hand window depicts a woman holding a sheaf of wheat. This is a symbol of plenty, longevity and the fulfilment of the life of Christ. Above the woman is the inscription
"Thy God Shall be My God". This reference is taken from the Old Testament book of Ruth, Chapter 1, verse 16 where Ruth, now widowed, joins her mother-in-law, Naomi in faith and place rather than return to her original home. She is a symbol of abiding loyalty and devotion.
St Andrew's Church in Walcha is the oldest building standing in the town and the oldest church in the Armidale Anglican Diocese, and it is in desperate need of salvation. The building is in a state of disrepair and has not been used since the 1990s; however, a group of residents want to change this and bring the building back to life. They have begun to raise $50,000 to put towards work to save the building and its historic stained glass windows. For the past few weeks I have told the story behind each window.
These windows represent the soul of the old Church and the history of its benefactors and staunchest proponents. They should be treated with respect, restored and displayed for future generations to appreciate and for the Glory of God for whom they were installed. Their history reflects Walcha history.
Thank you so much to the people who have already generously given to this important project.
