Current coach Barry Hoy, Ladies Auxiliary chief Rachel Laurie and vice president Andrew Crawford all received their life membership medals and standing ovations when they did. Good on ya guys, you certainly deserve it.
SINCE Walcha Rugby kicked off back in 1894 the club has had four Wallaby representatives: Bill Laycock, Peter Fenwicke, Andrew Laurie and Sam Payne. Also selected to represent Australia have been Jim Fenwicke in the 7s format and Michael Crawford at both schoolboy and U21 levels.
WALCHA has won 17 premierships along the way commencing in 1906 when they won the New England competition and then added another three in 1907, 1921 and 1953 when they rounded up Guyra 14-5 in the decider.
IN 1958 Walcha joined the Central North competition and three years later won both A Grade and Reggies in 1961 and then were successful in Reserve grade again the following season when they accounted for Kootingal 13-3.
The Reggies won premierships in 1965, 68 and 69 all against Moree who Walcha also defeated in the 1971 A Grade grand final.
WALCHA won their only U18 premiership in 1981 under the leadership of coach Bill Fletcher who had current A Grade Co Co-coach Barry Hoy as one of his star players. Club life member Bernard Lynch and present Ram's strapper David Walker were also members of the winning squad.
THREE years later the Rams rolled Moree 13-10 to win in 1984 and then in 1990 they snuck home against a red-hot favourite Barraba outfit 12-11. The Reggies made it a double in 1990 when they accounted for Moree 30-20.
IN 1997 the Rams A Grade beat odds-on favourite Tamworth on their home ground 33-20 where this year's reserve grade coach Hamish McLaren was a standout.
The Rams last premiership was won by the Reggies under coach Mick Lisle when they sunk Pirates 15-10 in the big one in 2009.
LET'S hope one more premiership will be added to the Rams overall tally in a few weeks' time. Walcha has another weekend off, this one coming due to finishing minor premiers which entitles them to host the major semi-final here at Peter Fenwicke Oval Saturday week.
LAST week Group 19 Rugby League held their annual presentations in Inverell and although none of the Jillaroos or Roos won awards they finished well up the list when the winners were announced.
Roos Captain Steve Eveleigh finished equal third in the Men's Second Division best and fairest awards on 11 points behind winner Corey Torrens from Tingha on 13 points and runner-up Jesse Rogers from Bingara.
JILLAROOS co-coach Robyn Broadbent finished second in both the Ladies League Tag best and fairest and highest point score. Uralla's Lauren Acton scooped the pool winning the best and fairest on 18 points highest points ever, 108, and highest try scorer with 21.
Robyn was runner up in the B&F on 14 points and the highest point score with 106 points while Jordan Hoy also finished in the top 5 B&F on 14 points and the most tries on 11 touchdowns.
ROOS winger Dean Kelly was in the top five point scorers on 78 - a fair way behind winner from Bingara Dylan Butler on 118. Uralla centre Paul Jackson was the highest try scorer with 18. Walcha's best were Jason Latham and Jock Abraham on seven tries each.
LOCAL veteran athlete Taddy McFarlane competed in the recent Tamworth 10km event where he won his 70-75 years section and finished 78 out of 204 overall runners. Taddy stopped the clock in 53 minutes and eight seconds.
CONGRATULATIONS to Ladies Golf Champion Cheryl McDonald and her husband Douglas after they combined to win the 2019 mixed foursome championships last Sunday. Well done to nett winners Lee and Ruth Fletcher who survived a comeback for the title with Col Berry and Donna Martin.
STILL on golf a reminder the annual Workplace Challenge played under a three-person ambrose format is scheduled for this Sunday commencing with a shotgun start at 11.30am.
Workmates from different jobs are encouraged to form a team but it is by no means compulsory - grab a couple of mates and come on out for a bash.
