Member for Armidale (Mr Davis Hughes) officially opened the G.R. Hicks Bridge.
Mr Hughes said that Mr Hicks had given a total of 200 years of service, had sat in at meetings for seven years of his life, and the distance he had travelled to meetings would have taken him twice around the world. The bridge named in his honour, across the Cobrabald River 14 miles south of Walcha, had cost nearly 14,000 pounds under a CAR Grant.
Mr Hughes said Mr Hicks record was equalled by few and surpassed by none. He had been a fine soldier, citizen and a good friend and a great many people could say 'thank you' to Mr Hicks for a start in life.
About 100 people attended the opening (including Walcha Shire President N.R. Turton) under very cold conditions.
