REIGNING premiers Uralla commenced their 2019/20 Walcha Cricket Competition in style when they won their opening round match against Colts by 80 runs last Saturday at John Oxley Sportsground. The visitors racked up 2/204 before dismissing Colts for 124.

AN UNBEATEN 155 run third-wicket partnership between Nathan Swann and Cameron Wood went along way to helping Uralla reach their total. Opener Swann belted fourteen 4's and three 6's on his way to his century while Wood cracked eight 4's and six 6's out of his 87 runs.
KENTUCKY youngsters Daniel Boyd and Daniel Blanch also registered a century partnership when they put on 109 runs for the fifth wicket against Round Swamp. Skipper Boyd hit eleven 4s, including five in succession off Liam Brennan, and three 6s whereas his offsider Blanch found the boundary on five occasions.
IT WAS certainly a battle of the Boyds in the Kentucky v Swamp game when Wayne and his two sons Daniel and Thomas were members of the winning outfit while Michael and his three sons Jim, Cooper and Preston all had a run with the runners-up. Considering there was only 18 players all up in both teams nearly half were Boyds.

HOW the tide can change ever so quickly including when you are at the bowling crease. Swamp medium-pacer Liam Brennan took a wicket in his first over and had 3/11 after his second over before finishing with 3/31 off three overs. Kentucky opener Beau Abraham had dangerous Swamp opening batman Ben France caught by Michael Aspinall for a duck in his first over had 1/6 after two overs before ending up with 1/35 off his maximum four overs.

THERE is a big weekend of golf planned ahead here on the Walcha course, commencing with the Veterans Open and individual event on Friday which is sponsored by Bridges Financial Services Armidale and has been for a few years now.
ON SATURDAY the 4BBB mixed open sponsored by Apsley Motors is scheduled before the Walcha Open, supported by the Port Macquarie branch of Drummond Golf, Betts Transport and Peter Norbury, takes place on Sunday also under a 4BBB format. All three events are 10am shotgun starts.
LAST weekend eight golfers represented Walcha at the 2019 New South Wales Sand Green Championships in Barraba. Best of the Walcha boys was Wayne Brennan on 162(8181) followed by Anthony Smith on 163 (8380) Barry Hoad 175 (8689) Don Brooks 177 (9285) Steph Sweeney 182 (88 94) Peter Norbury 187 (92950) while Mal Ballard shot a 95 on Saturday and Neil Dark 98 on Sunday. Warren player Billy Brigden won the overall event with a three-over-par with a total of 145.
