Walcha Mayor Eric Noakes, the new GM Anne Modderno, and Walcha Council director of engineering Dylan Reeves toured the shire and conducted seven public meetings in two days.

On the agenda was water security, water usage, waste management, major infrastructure projects, the asset management plan and capital works.

"We also took the opportunity to test a few ideas out with the community," said Mrs Modderno.

"Overall, the feedback was positive, and we received quite a few suggestions which we have noted."

Some of the potential Walcha Council initiatives tested on the meeting attendees were: the opening of both town fountains using non-treated water; a creation of non-smoking zones at McHattan Park and along the main street; and the current level of childcare options available.

Mrs Modderno also announced that last week council was told by MP Barnaby Joyce it was eligible for another $1M in infrastructure funding under the next round of Drought Communities Fund. The objective for any capital investment funded is to help draw wealth back into the town, shops and businesses struggling as a result of the drought.

This is the second time the town has been offered access to $1M from the fund. The newly opened function centre at the Walcha Showground was the result of a previous round of funding.

"Some of the suggestions we received for potential projects were upgrades to the toilets at Nowendoc, the Ingelba Hall facilities, and the Woolbrook Stampede ground," Mrs Modderno said.

"We will need costed project applications submitted to us by December 6, so we can decide at the December ordinary meeting which projects we will apply for. Previous applications will be considered, but they will need to be resubmitted."

As construction needs to be completed by the end of 2020, Mr Noakes said 'shovel ready' projects would be prioritised.
