Sweeney, who has won the championship 13 times, and the last 12 in succession, jumped away to a good start, winning the opening game 9-5 before Nichols responded by winning the next two games 9-3. Not going down without a fight, Sweeney made his opponent battle it out to the end before going down 10-9 in the fourth and deciding game.
In the B-grade final, exciting teenager Jasper Russ didn't allow James Norton into the contest and rounded him up 3-0 (9-0, 9-3, 9-5).
Veteran Murray Rose dropped the third game in the C-grade final against Chris Broadbent before he got the job done 3-1 (9-7, 9-5, 2-9, 9-2). When the ladies fought out the D-grade decider, Gemma Johnson defeated Jess Upton 3-1 (9-4, 8-10, 9-1, 10-8). In the past 30 years there haven't been many A-grade champions due to Sweeney's 13 wins, Michael Gibson winning on 10 occasions (five in succession) and Gerry Moran racking up four on-the-trot.
