"The free entry no doubt contributed to that fact," said Walcha Jockey Club secretary Kevin Ferrier.

"The Racecourse was in perfect condition despite the rain we had earlier in the week and the day before. This enabled the meeting to continue after we experienced the storm that hit in the afternoon."

Undeterred most of the crowd hung around after the downpour to make the day a huge success Mr Ferrier said.

"The Racing was keen all day with the opening two events won by the favourites with jockey Greg Ryan aboard," he said.

"Because of the rain, the track was downgraded to a heavy 9 for the Ron Martin Maiden. This race was taken out by local trainer George Woodward with A Trip To London spread-eagling the field to record an imposing win at the marvellous odds of 89 to 1."

The Walcha Cup was a keenly contested event with the eventual winner Hamoon Ballad getting up right on the line.

"The rain continued, and we were able to complete Friday's program, but unfortunately, the 35 mls of rain recorded that afternoon put paid to Saturday's meeting with conditions becoming very awkward underfoot," Mr Ferrier said.

"Overall, the betting turnover was pleasing despite the track downgrades."

The Walcha Carrying Company Fashions in the Field was also well patronised with a new format this year where punters at the track voted for their favourite fashionista.

Damian Jones was declared the best-dressed man and John Sevil came in close behind him.

Proving that it pays to have lots of friends with you at the races - the best-dressed couple category was won by two men this year - Pitch Black and Tony Lear.

Sporting a stunning hatinator Sharon Edmonds was awarded best headwear, and Shae Partridge was runner up.

Finally, the best-dressed lady was awarded to home crowd favourites Anna Barwick and runner up Anne Martin.
