Cancer Council NSW has launched a new movement, Hope at Home, to enable the community to continue to support those who have been impacted by cancer, despite the cancellation of local fundraising events due to COVID-19.
Given the high risk to public health currently posed by COVID-19, Cancer Council NSW made the decision to postpone all local community fundraising events due to take place in May and June this year.
Instead, the Hope at Home initiative will allow people to show their support in a new way.
Those who choose to take part will receive a HOPE kit, containing a HOPE bag and LED candle to go inside.
Messages of hope can be written on the bags, which can be placed in a window or outside a front door to show hope to the community.
"Nothing is more important to Cancer Council NSW than the health and safety of our volunteers, staff and supporters - although it is disappointing we had to cancel our community fundraising events, safety must come first," Cancer Council NSW community relations coordinator Kate Dubois said.
"However, we are excited to launch our new Hope at Home movement to bring our community together in these uncertain times.
"We are sending Hope at Home kits to anyone wishing to get involved.
"This is a chance to come together as a community and acknowledge cancer patients and the additional challenges they are going through during this time of uncertainty.
"It's going to be a beautiful way to show each other we are here."
For anyone wanting to support the Hope at Home initiative, you can register and purchase your Hope at Home kit or donate at give.cancercouncil.com.au/hopeathome.
All funds raised so far have been put towards Cancer Council's information and support services, its lifesaving work in cancer research and community prevention programs.
