SPLASH: Sharks' Leah Dodd has been named coach of the open women's Ovens and Murray water polo team for the Canberra Cup in September.

Ovens and Murray water polo players have begun preparations for September's Canberra Cup.

Sharks star Leah Dodd is set to coach the open women's side, with the team to hold selections in the coming weeks.

Dodd said there has been a lot of interest in the cup following the cancellation of majority of the water polo calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"You run the risk that at the last minute it could be cancelled, but fingers cross it goes ahead," Dodd said.

"It's usually a really high standard of competition."

The women's side has had previous success at the event.

Junior sides have been selected, while no coach has been appointed for the men's team yet.

Tyson Mutsch and Kristy Hogan will coach the under-17s teams, while Shannon Gould and Darcy Millet will lead the under-14s in Canberra.
