The theme for NSW Seniors Week is Live Life! involves the celebration of active, healthy, independent seniors.
NSW government grants were allocated to Walcha Council, Guyra Shire Council, the Inverell Art Society and the Tenterfield Senior Citizens Committee, with each receiving $1000 to assist with their local events.
Yesterday Walcha Council held the first of its annual Senior Citizens Week events – a black and white lunch at the Walcha Bowling Club where more than 100 seniors enjoyed morning tea and lunch with the mayor and council staff.
Walcha Home and Community Care (HACC) organised entertainment with local identity Cyril Green and family singing for guests and the Yarrowitch School played marimbas and sang.
The council organised a bus to collect anyone who needed transport to the function.
Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshal said Senior’s Week was the largest celebration for people over 60 in the southern hemisphere.
“These grants are a great initiative because they are awarded to local organisations which helps spread the celebrations across the state, rather than confining them exclusively to larger towns and cities,” Mr Marshall said.
Tomorrow the fun continues with ‘Leisure on the Levees’.
“Come along and join in the fun activities for seniors on the banks of the Apsley River - it’s free,” said HACC co-ordinator Cathy Noon.
At 10am there will be a walk along the levee banks, with participants to meet at the Fitzroy Street bridge.
Then at 11am there will be a balance and strength exercise demonstration followed by a free sausage sizzle at the Walcha Bowling Club at 12.30pm and a social game of bowls.
“If you require transport the Community bus will collect you from home please call the Walcha Council Community Care Office today on 6774 2471,” Mrs Noon said.
