The Walcha Rams are currently leading the Central north Rugby Union Tier 2 on 38 points followed by Tamworth and Scone 23, Barraba 13 and Quirindi 1. This Saturday marks the halfway mark of the competition where Walcha receive the bye as do the Roos in Group 4 Second Division Rugby League. A bit of bad luck for local footy fans really.

Following their 20-14 win over Tamworth last Saturday the Rams are the only team in Tier 2 with a positive points for and against differential. They have scored 366 points while conceding 277 for +89 while the Magpies are next best on 47.
Roos co-coaches Peter Berry and Jack O’Hara have plenty to work on in the next couple of weeks before Walcha take on Werris Creek at their home ground Taylor Oval. Last Saturday the Roos didn’t play well, with plenty of players making simple mistakes - not just one or two. The main positive to come out of the performance was the players are certainly trying hard individually but at the moment the team is not gelling as well as it could be.
The Walcha Rugby League is conducting a raffle to be drawn at presentation night September 27 with the main prize an autographed and framed Australian Kangaroos Guernsey. Second prize is a Walcha RLFC supporters pack while third and fourth prizes are loads of wood. Most if not all players should have tickets available at $2 each or three for $5.
The TAS under 16s rugby union squad is currently touring New Zealand where Walcha players Callan Creighton and Nick Rogers are taking part in the 10-day trip as members of the team. The boys return home tomorrow after playing three games in the land of the long white cloud.
Former Roos winger Brodie Cross added another string to his sporting bow when he won the novice saddle bronc at the Spur Up Rodeo Challenge at Moonbi last weekend. The rodeo was part of the Australian governments’ drought assistance package and was run by ABCRA.
Local field hockey players Anne Martin and Michelle Power are presently in Darwin and after training (yesterday and the day before) are set to play in the Australian Veteran Hockey Championships. Anne is in the NSW over 50s side while Michelle is a member of the over 40s and both have to play up to six games each during the next week. Anne reports the weather was hard to put up with on Tuesday at 28 degrees Celsius after leaving on minus 5 C here at home.
LaSt Saturday three players were sent to the sin bin for swearing during the Group 4 second division rugby league match between Boggabri and Walcha including Roos Jason Latham and Brett Beard who were forced to spend time on the naughty chair. It’s a bit rich really as early in the week I was watching a replay of the NRL minor grades on Fox Sports and the language coming over the audio on it was a lot worse than what was being used at Boggabri.
Well, by the time you read this hopefully NSW have won the 2014 State of Origin 3-0 after downing Queensland 21-14 in the final game of this series last night. Thankfully the Blues had already won the series but a clean sweep would be nice especially for the fans that were either born or live in NSW and choose to support the Blues. Nine years between drinks is a long time.
