LAST Saturday Manly supporter Margaret Morris was dressed up in South’s gear at the Newie showing support for the club her late husband Neville followed. At one stage her mobile phone rang which soon had Marg throwing things out of her bag left right and centre in an attempt to find the phone. She need not have bothered emptying her bag the phone was sitting where Margaret had left it half a metre away from where all the action was taking place.

ROOS co-coach Peter Berry was at his brilliant best at the Newie last weekend when he put some coins in the pool table to play the jukebox. Apparently without much success but you will have to see Perc for more information.
DAYLIGHT Savings changeover day usually catches someone out and rumour has it last Sunday morning was no different. By all accounts Roos scoreboard attendant Jamie Wall was late for raffles duty at the Ex Services club where Chinese cook at the same establishment Victor Ng was one hour late, causing a bit of a rearrangement for the indoor bowler’s lunch. Melanie Hawkins experienced her own time problems before going to work at West End Store, but Mel’s dilemma was the other way she was going to be an hour early until she worked it out just in time.
LAST Saturday night a Central Coast traveller Linda Doubleday called in at the Apsley Arms Hotel and while she was there spotted a 1970s manly Warringah footy photo on the wall before declaring she was a Sea Eagles supporter. When I asked her to name the players, Linda proved she really was an Eagles fan by rattling off the player’s names in no time at all. Heard along the grapevine that one of the bike riding crew Linda was with was involved in a motorbike accident on the Thunderbolts Way the next day and had to be airlifted by the Westpac Helicopter. Hope everything is okay.
BRADY’S Saddlery celebrated 40 years in Walcha last Saturday and ironically when Bernie was speaking to Max Amidy on the ‘dog and bone’, Max informed Bernie that he had a 40 year anniversary coming up as well. Four decades ago Max streaked at the Taree races and he had received an invitation from the race club to return there to celebrate the ‘event’. Not sure if Max re-enacted the streak, but he did mention to Bernie he really didn’t have any interest in doing so.
THERE was love in the air at the New England Hotel last Saturday when hosts Robert and Desiree Denniss celebrated 39 years of marriage. When Desiree was asked what Bob’s pickup line was she replied ‘the lollies are in my pocket’, which amused those people listening at the time.
Snowboarder Luke Martin had a few mower problems at the corner of Fitzroy and Lagoon Streets recently. Instead of using fuel to fill the mower up, Luke went for a somewhat different alternative – sheep drench. Sheep and drench usually go alright together and will keep the grass down but apparently mowers and drench don’t work quite as well.
WALCHA darting trio Charlie, Brown, Andrew McGuffog and Chris Watts travel to Tamworth each week to play, but it had nothing to do with throwing spears that caused Charlie a few hassles last week. He left his jacket at ‘The Pub’ where the boys had played and on arrival home couldn’t get into his house because his keys were in the jacket along with a few other things. Word has it that Charlie had a sleepover next door at the abode of neighbour Stan Coulter and had the jacket and its contents returned the next day.
LOCAL cyclist Melanie Ledingham has signed up for the Great Cycle Challenge which is a fundraiser for kids with cancer and research. Mel’s goal is to ride 500 kilometres throughout October in a bid to raise $500. Any donations can be made on the www.GreatCycleChallenge.com.au/riders/website or dropped into Cafe graze or the West End Store.
STILL on cyclists, a number of locals rode from Nowendoc to Taree a fortnight ago after the Walcha to Nowendoc leg was washed out. Scotty Kermode survived the trip without incident but on arrival home somehow got tangled up in his bike and injured his knee. Craig and Prue Morgan left their place before realising they had forgot something – their bikes, whereas Wayne Brennan was blamed for stirring up two howling dogs across the river while stacking a few ‘z’s.
LONG-time South Sydney supporter Michael Aspinall certainly had a big weekend at the footy where he rubbed shoulders with plenty of celebrities and he even got his hands on the premiership trophy (pictured left). Another couple of Bunny’s supporters Wily Makeham and Kevin Creighton bumped into each other which they probably thought would have been a bit unlikely given here were around 84,000 people in attendance at the grand final.
