Such was the call put out by the Recognise campaigners travelling around the nation calling for a referendum to rewrite certain aspects of the Australian constitution that continue to discriminate against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander citizens.
I think overwhelmingly people want to see this happen. We have taken some social polling which says that 70 per cent of Australians want to see this happen,

8.10am: Mining clash with candidates in pre-poll public event.
The tables were turned on the Shenhua Watermark mining issue, currently a hot topic in Gunnedah, at the Chamber of Commerce Meet the Candidates event on Tuesday night.
Shenhua Watermark project manager Paul Jackson asked independent candidate Peter Draper how he would “replace the 400 local direct jobs your policy will take out of the future prospects for this community and their children?”

A dozen bags of cow manure were dumped on incumbent Lismore MP Thomas George’s office doorstep as a group of farmers and protesters rallied outside his Carrington St electoral office against coal seam gas exploration.
7.30am: Schoolgirl pleads guilty
The 14-year-old Inverell student, charged with the February 25 Inverell High School fire, appeared in Inverell Local Court for the first time on Thursday morning.

A low pressure trough lies over the northeast of New South Wales. A high pressure system is moving towards Tasmania, extending a ridge along the coast. The high will move east of Tasmania today, strengthening the ridge throughout the state and the trough will weaken further. Another trough/frontal system is expected to move through the state during Saturday and Sunday.
Today's RFS rural fire danger is set at low to moderate for the New England area, with high danger warnings for the Northern Slopes, Far North Coast and North Western areas.
