Walcha Central School (WSC) started Education Week in a spectacular fashion on Monday morning when the annual assembly to celebrate those who contribute above and beyond in the field of our local education was opened with a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony to cleanse the school and bring in good energy.

Aboriginal elder Uncle Fred Reid gave the formal ‘welcome to country’ first in the language of the Dhungutti people and then in English, before his son Tod began the smoking ceremony.
Afterwards WCS Principal Mark Hall spoke about the strong tie the school has with the community and its role in creating the community of the future.
“We need to ask ourselves and our children what type of community we want tomorrow,” he said.
“As a nation we now include the teaching of general capabilities across critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding as well as intercultural understanding; but what is the perfect education mix for youth growing up in Walcha today?”
