Over the years the place where we dispose of our rubbish has had many name changes but even though there have been many labels the problem is consistent.

Walcha Council is currently reviewing the long term strategy for waste management options. Presently waste from the skip bins is transported to Tamworth and annually, around 400 tonnes of kerbside rubbish collection is put into landfill at the Walcha depot. We are currently exercising a three year option extension on the contract with Tamworth Council to send the skip bin waste to their facility.
What happens following this has a major influence on Walcha Council plans. Recycling plays an important part of Council’s ongoing plans. We may go to a four bin collection system and inspection of waste delivered. Walcha operates one of the few depots that do not charge for individual waste drop offs and this will be included in the review.
Recycling does not make a profit for Council, but disposing of recyclable waste in general waste leads to extra cost to Council that may be avoided.
The Nowendoc and Woolbrook depots will also form part of this review. Environmental laws dictate a large part of what happens to our waste and these are a primary consideration in any future plans. Council will keep the community informed on where we are headed with this and allow ample time for consultation.
As part of the new Council’s responsibility we are also reviewing the Community Strategic Plan. As with most Council documents this will be on public display and give the community adequate time to comment.
Thank you for putting your faith in the new Council, we are gelling together well and look forward to putting our ideas into action in 2017.
