Chief steward Vicki McIvor said all cooking entries had to be delivered to the pavilion at the showground by 10.30am on Thursday, March 16.
“Judging will begin at 11am,” Mrs McIvor said.
She encouraged everyone to read the cooking section of the show guide carefully before you plan to cook and use the tins and recipes specified.
“If you require a specific cake recipe, please contact me as soon as possible,” she said.
“The section has had another makeover, so only cook and use tins that are specified. If you bring in cooking that is not in the schedule, it will be displayed only, not judged.”
All the yummy entries need to be picked up by 6pm on Saturday, March 18, or it will be donated to a church charity auction.
This year, a gingerbread decoration afternoon has been organised by Carnie Kermode, for next Monday, March 13 from 4pm-5pm at Walcha Handmade for the children’s cooking section.
Four biscuits will be decorated, three biscuits will be delivered to the Pavilion by Carnie and one to take home. Please book with Carnie by Friday, March 10 on 6777 6452.
“Once again we would like children to participate, so if parents could encourage and help the younger ones to bake something, I’m sure they will have good fun,” Mrs McIvor said.
“Supervise or assist your children where necessary, but don’t be tempted to do it all for them or they will not learn, then let them have fun with the decorations.”
Baking tips
- Let the cake cool for awhile before turning out. Try placing a soft tea towel on the rack before turning out so you don’t have cake rack marks on the top or base of cakes.
- If lining tins, cut paper to the exact size for the base/sides, to eliminate creases in the paper.
- If asked to supply a list of ingredients for particular cakes, write out or photocopy ingredients.
- Some cakes can be frozen beforehand, so please make sure they are well thawed before entering.
- Use a deeper container than the cake, so icing does not stick to the lid.
- Use a larger piece of paper in the tin, under the cake, so lifting out is easier.
- Don’t use gladwrap to cover cakes as it will stick to the icing.
- Transport cakes on a flat surface.
- When you bring cooking in a box or container, please wait and take it with you, as we do not have the space to store it.
- We had a great response last year, so we are hoping for the same again this year.
